Liechtenstein Work Visas & Work Permits

Learn how to get Liechtenstein work visas, how to hire foreign workers in Liechtenstein, and more

If you are preparing to expand your business into the European micro-state of Liechtenstein, you may need to bring foreign employees in to help with the process. In many cases, these employees will need work visas for Liechtenstein in order to legally work in the country.

The visa system in Liechtenstein can be difficult to follow, with complex regulations that are influenced not just by national-level law but also by its membership to the European Economic Area (EEA). Additionally, as it is such a small country, it has several unique employment laws to accommodate the large number of cross-border workers on which it relies.

At Horizons, our global expansion specialists offer a large selection of Liechtenstein work visa solutions, immigration support, and outsourcing services that give your company everything it needs to expand into Liechtenstein with the best global talent.

Basic requirements for Liechtenstein work visas

For those who need a Liechtenstein work visa, the requirements can vary depending on the type of visa. However, the basic requirements that most people will need to meet include:

  • A valid passport
  • Passport photos
  • Application forms
  • Application fees
  • Proof of relevant qualifications/work experience

Types of Liechtenstein work visas

For Swiss residents and residents of European Economic Area countries, the visa laws are distinct from those for residents of other countries. Swiss residents do not need any visas or permits to legally work in Liechtenstein, but generally need to remain residents of Switzerland.

EEA residents are also allowed to work without full work permits, but they must register with the Migration and Passport office within ten days of starting work and must also remain residents of their home countries. For these reasons, most foreign workers come from neighboring countries of Switzerland, Austria, and Germany.

For anyone to actually live in Liechtenstein, they must obtain a residence permit. However, these are very strictly regulated, and the government only issues a small number each year, so it is generally impractical for most people.

How to get a Liechtenstein work visa

For the reasons mentioned above, it is impractical for most foreigners to work in Liechtenstein, unless they are residents of neighboring EEA countries or Switzerland, so usually it is best to hire from these countries when possible. If you are employing anybody from a third country (anywhere outside Switzerland and the EEA), then they may be able to obtain a temporary residence permit. However, they will need to be highly qualified in their field or at management level in most cases. It is also generally necessary to demonstrate that no suitable employees could be found in EEA countries, Switzerland, or Liechtenstein itself.

Other considerations

Due to the complexity of the visa process and the limited number of residence permits available, it is important for any employers to start the application process as early as possible.
