Austria Work Visas & Permits

If your business is planning to expand to Austria, it is likely that you’ll want to bring in some foreign workers to help with the setup and growth. To do this, you will generally need to obtain an individual Austria work visa for each employee.

The process of getting your Austrian work visas can be complicated and could take several weeks. The country has various types of visas, so it is important to understand the relevant visa for your situation and follow all the regulations to avoid potentially expensive delays.

At Horizons, our expansion specialists offer comprehensive Austria work visa solutions, immigration support, and outsourcing, giving your business everything needed to thrive in Austria with the help of the best global talent.

Basic requirements for Austria work visas

As Austria is a member of the European Union (EU), and European Economic Area (EEA), nationals of EU/EEA countries do not need visas to visit, and it is also usually much easier for them to work in Austria.

For workers coming from outside the EU/EEA, there are a number of options, all of which have different requirements. However, there are some basic requirements that most people will need to fulfill:

  • Application forms and fees
  • Medical insurance
  • Valid passport
  • Proof of funds
  • Biometric
  • Proof of adequate accommodation
  • Birth certificate
  • Proof of relevant qualifications/work experience
  • Proof of language ability

Different types of Austria visas

There are a number of different types of Austrian visas available. Which one is best for your employees should be determined on a case-by-case basis. Some of the most common are:

  • EU Blue Cards
  • Jobseeker visas
  • Business visas
  • Residence visas (for six months)
  • Red-White-Red Card
The Red-White-Red Card is a popular option as it allows workers to live and work in Austria for two years. It is linked to a single employer.

Obtaining work visas for Austria

To apply for a Red-White-Red Card, your employees will need to file their application along with relevant documents at an Austrian representative authority in their home country. This can also be done in Austria by either the employer or employee.

Further considerations

If any of your employees need to bring family members with them to Austria, this should be arranged in advance as they will usually need to be linked to the visa.

As with all countries, it is good practice to apply for any visas well in advance of needing them as delays can happen.
