Yes, it is possible to reduce the notice period in exceptional circumstances, but employers will need to ensure that they pay the following: 

  • A payment in lieu of notice.
  • A severance or long service payment (if conditions are satisfied).
  • Accrued annual leave.
  • A proportional end-of-year payment.

 If the employee is dismissed summarily, no notice or payment in lieu of notice is required.
