In Switzerland, both full-time and part-time workers are entitled to a minimum of 4 weeks of paid leave per year. Employees can also take some days or hours off to celebrate special events. Employees must seek an employer’s approval though for when they would like to take their annual leave.
There is no law that allows parents to take paid time off for parental leave freely at the same time. However, both new mothers and fathers are entitled to maternity and paternity leave benefits.
In Switzerland, anyone who undertakes paid work is entitled to maternity benefits. This means that anyone who is employed on a full-time, part-time or self-employed basis has access. They will have to meet certain conditions though to qualify. These conditions include:
The maternity benefit lasts for a total of 14 weeks, with compensation amounting to 80% of your average earnings or a maximum of 198 CHF a day. Depending on where the employee works in Switzerland may afford them higher maternity benefits amounts as per Cantonal agreements. The maternity benefit usually begins on the day of the birth of the child.
Fathers looking to take paternity leave in Switzerland can take off up to 2 weeks’ leave within 6 months of birth. Compensation is the same as maternity leave which equates to 80% of the average earnings for that timeframe but with a maximum of 195 CHF a day.
Switzerland offers employees generous paid sick leave conditions in the event that someone falls ill at work.
For sick leave, many employers will have sickness benefit insurance. This insurance covers employees for up to 720 days of illness. If an employer does not have sickness benefit insurance, they must pay an employee for a minimum of 3 weeks their full salary in the first year of employment.
It is illegal for an employer to dismiss an employee within a limited timeframe if they fall ill and presents with evidence of inability to work due to illness. However, employers can terminate an employment contract if an employee is still on a trial period. Employees must present a valid medical certificate if they have taken 3 consecutive days off work.
Employees are entitled to 3 days’ leave in the event there is a death in the family.

Employees in Switzerland are entitled to 4 weeks of paid annual leave per year.
Apart from the mandatory 4 weeks of paid leave a year, employees are also entitled to paid sick leave and days off for public holidays and special events.
In the first year of employment, an employee is entitled to 30 days of sick leave. This amount of sick leave goes up depending on if the employer has sickness benefit insurance or not.
