Healthcare in the Philippines

The Philippines has a public health care system called the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth). PhilHealth aims to provide health insurance coverage to all Filipinos, and it does provide sufficient care for many medical needs.

However, while the government provides public healthcare services, the quality and accessibility of healthcare can vary depending on the region and resources available. It is customary in the Philippines for those who are able to, to also subscribe to private healthcare. Private healthcare providers often offer a higher standard of medical care, modern facilities, and a wider range of specialized services.

Pensions in the Philippines

The Philippines does have a public pension system in place. The public pension system is funded by Social Security System (SSS) monthly employee/employer contributions. These contributions are used to build up individual members’ accounts, which can be accessed upon reaching retirement age or in case of qualifying events such as disability or sickness.

In addition to the public pension, many employers voluntarily provide retirement benefits or participate in private retirement plans to attract and retain skilled employees and to support their workforce’s long-term financial security.

Disability in the Philippines

The Philippines Government provides disability benefits to employees through the Social Security System (SSS) contributions. The disability benefits offered by the SSS are as follows:

  1. Sickness Benefit. If an employee is unable to work due to temporary disability caused by sickness or injury, they may be eligible for a daily cash allowance.
  2. Disability Pension. If an employee becomes permanently disabled due to sickness or injury and is unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity, they may qualify for a monthly disability pension.
  3. Total Disability Benefit. In cases of total permanent disability where the member is unable to work and needs the assistance of another person for daily living activities, a lump-sum amount may be granted in addition to the monthly disability pension.

Unemployment in the Philippines

In the Philippines, there is no specific government-run unemployment benefit system for workers who become unemployed or lose their jobs.
