Remote work in India – Overview

The COVID-19 pandemic hit the Indian population hard in 2020, prompting millions of companies to re-structure their business models to allow employees to work remotely. Since then, remote or hybrid working models have increased exponentially through both direct foreign investment and remote working technology adoption or development.

A recent report has found that around 82% of Indian employees prefer remote working conditions. However, there is mixed reports as to whether the work from home (WFH) model will be sustainable for the country moving forward.

Unlike other nations creating digital nomad visas for foreigners, India has introduced no such visa for foreigners to be able to live and work as a remote worker in India. This means if a foreigner wants to work legally in India as a remote worker for a foreign firm, they will need to attain a workers permit which in most cases will not be possible as a foreign worker.

Remote work in India – Laws & Regulations

There are no specific labour laws that have been introduced to promote or protect remote working conditions in India.
