Working hours are governed by three different statutes in India including the International Labor Organisation convention, the Factories Act 1948 & the respective Shop & Establishments Acts of each state. However, the India government has streamlined standard working hour caps to any employee that is categorised as a “worker.” Employees are capped at a 48-hour week and maximum of 12 hours a day.
The standard working days in India is Monday to Friday, but weekends are also possible.
An employee can work up to 48 hours a week on a standard employment contract.
Part time hours is considered anything less than 35 hours per week in India.
Overtime rules are regulated by each state in India, which means there are varying laws regarding what constitutes overtime rates and hours. However, a new labor code has increased how much overtime an employee can uptake in India. Now, an employee can work up to a maximum of 125 extra hours per quarter of overtime hours on top of the capped 48 hour week. This was changed recently from a maximum cap of 50 hours per quarter.
It is not illegal to be called upon to work on a weekend in India. Overtime policies allow employers to contact their workers and request they work on weekends.
New labor codes have been introduced in India to make it easier for employers to offer 4 day work weeks to employees. However, with these new codes, it also makes it possible for employers to contact employees to work on the weekend.

The maximum amount of overtime equates to around 500 hours annually that an employer can ask an employee to do.
