How Has the Minimum Wage in Thailand Changed in the Last 5 Years and Beyond?

From 2021 to 2022, the minimum wage in Thailand saw an increase of around 5-8%, depending on the region. This was the first increase in over 2 years by the MOL.

Thailand’s Ministry of Labour is set to increase the minimum wage in 2024, which will likely be announced in December 2023. While the exact rate is yet to be confirmed, it’s expected to exceed inflation but fall short of the proposed daily 400 baht (US$11.12) to mitigate the impact on SMEs. The country’s minimum wage last saw an adjustment in October 2022, varying from 328 baht to 354 baht across different provinces.

The ruling Pheu Thai party had aimed for a 600 baht daily wage by 2027 as part of its campaign. However, with incremental annual increases, this target may be adjusted to a figure near that rate. Concerns about a significant hike leading to higher business costs and potential relocation of production to other ASEAN countries have led to a more cautious approach.

Wage increases are determined by a tripartite Wage Committee, considering factors like the cost-of-living index, inflation, production costs, and regional economic structures. The Ministry of Labour oversees this process, conducting annual surveys to gauge the necessary adjustments per province. Despite the recent low inflation rate, the decision on the new minimum wage will consider a broad range of economic and social conditions.

Minimum wages have been revised in Thailand with effect from 01 January 2024. The minimum wage in Bangkok has increased from THB353.00 to THB363.00 per day.
