In China, all foreigner willing to work must obtain both a residence permit and a work permit. These two types of visas will allow foreign employees to work in China.

Required documents for a work visa in China

The required document for a work visa in China are as follows:

  • Passport – it must be a least six months before the expiry date and at least one blank page left
  • China Work Visa Application Form
  • Recent photo
  • Proof of work permit
  • Other supporting documents – these are on a case-by-case basis and could include a medical form or criminal history check-up.

Getting a visa when the employee is based outside China is the proper way to obihj,tain a visa.

There is no need to make an appointment, unlike other visa processes with other countries. First you will apply online from outside China for a Foreigner’s Work Permit Notice. The second step is to go to the Chinese embassy, consulate, or other diplomatic mission in person to apply for a Z-Class Visa. Turn in your passport, Work Permit Notice and Visa Application and wait until you receive the visa. Once the visa is received then you can get on a plane to travel to China.

Getting a work visa when the employee is based inside of China can be difficult. The proper procedure is to apply from outside the country before you travel to China with a visa in hand.

Special notes about work visas in China

It is important to note that all foreign working permit holders must register with the police within 24 hours of their arrival in China. To register with the police you must bring:

  • a passport;
  • a housing contract and;
  • a copy of the landlord’s ID and phone number. Some police offices like to have the landlord in person.

In China, visa holder must have their family members apply to an S2 visa in order to bring their family. The S2 visas are for a spouse, parent, child, child’s spouse, parents-in-law, grandparents, and/or grandchildren.
